I wanted to share my social experiences in the EXCEL program for the new students coming from high school to give them a general idea of what to expect here at Georgia Tech.

Interactions with EXCEL

Kaleb with Lizzie and some friendsThere are many ways for EXCEL students to get socially involved on campus. One of those ways are the community meetings that are held monthly that help us get to know each other better and participate in team building activities. In September, for example, I gave a presentation for improving Georgia Tech’s accessibility and safety. Then all the students got to try out their baking skills in a contest and I was a taste tester. (Everybody wins of course, but my favorite was the chocolate cake!)

I also meet up with my mentor Lizzie who helps me out a lot with my independent and social goals. For example, during the first and second semesters, we went out off campus for coffee which was great and we sometimes walk too. She even helped with my first personal blog. Now we always meet Mondays and Thursdays every week for lunch or just hangout to discuss my goals or our day.

Exploring around Campus

I like to walk by myself just exploring the campus plazas or the student center which is by the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC) building to pass the time or find a quiet place to work. I would recommend anyone who is new to EXCEL to try the Tin Drum restaurant over at Tech Square or Sublime Doughnuts at Tech Plaza. Also, I do recommend taking the time to talk to students about their clubs or events at the tables they set up at the CULC building. On your way, try some of the food stands and food trucks too. But just keep in mind that food vendors are not always there at specific times or days.

Experiential Learning

There will be times when the EXCEL teachers will announce special trips related back to the assignment for reflections. For example, I went to Zoo Atlanta to take pictures so I can practice using Photoshop. This was my first time at Zoo Atlanta, and I got to see one of my favorite animals which is the sloth, my spirit animal.

I also visited the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where I learned about the achievements of the American Civil Rights Movement and the Global Human Rights Movement. I felt a little disconsolate about the past but I feel I can make a difference in the future.

That’s my experience so far with the social side of EXCEL. I have learned so much and hopefully this blog may help you through your first time at Georgia Tech. Just remember to be yourself and you can always ask for help from people at Georgia Tech.
